TRUSTED EXPERT DELIVERING
There are currently 4 FDA approved neurotoxins available in USA. First came Botox Cosmetic in 2002, then Dysport in 2009, then Xeomin in 2010. We haven’t had a new neurotoxin in almost a decade! Jeuveau became FDA approved this year and it is only neurotoxin entirely focused on the aesthetic market. The goal of this newcomer is to make the beauty experience delightful and achievable and to democratize beauty for the millennial minded consumers.
Before any neurotoxin becomes FDA approved, it undergoes rigorous testing to show safety, superiority to placebo and noninferiority to the market leader Botox Cosmetic. How did this newcomer fare you ask? Well, it showed that it is a safe and effective alternative to the currently available options. It is superior to placebo and more like Botox than different from Botox.
When Dysport and Xeomin became available, I tried them and decided that I prefer to use Botox Cosmetic. I inject over 40,000 units of Botox Cosmetic yearly. This is kind of a big deal considering that I am the only person performing facial injectables in my practice and that the average patient uses an average of 40 units per treatment! So far this year I have injected 20,000 units of Botox and 2,500 units of Jeuveau, and I am well on my way to achieving my 40,000 plus units this year. I find that Jeuveau starts to work a bit faster than Botox. It remains to be seen if it lasts any longer or about the same as Botox.
The neurotoxin story does not end here. There are more neurotoxins coming to the US with interesting new features. There is a short acting neurotoxin coming that will take effect in 24 hours and last about a month! There is a long acting neurotoxin coming that will last up to 6 months! The best thing to do as a consumer is to partner with an expert in facial injectables to guide you in your aesthetic journey in this ever changing market.
