To schedule a consultation with Dr. Monica Bonakdar in Newport Beach to discuss removing your varicose veins, please call Bonakdar Institute at (949) 393-3433.

Causes of Varicose Veins

No single, definite cause of varicose veins exists, but you may be at an increased risk for developing them if:

  • Your family has a history of varicose veins
  • You are a women of childbearing age or older
  • You must stand for long periods of time regularly
  • You are overweight
  • You are experiencing hormonal fluctuations, such as occurs with pregnancy, puberty, menopause and taking birth control pills

At a more basic level, varicose veins tend to result when the walls of the veins become weaker or fail altogether. You may or may not experience pain and tenderness in the area of your varicose veins. Most patients want these veins removed because of their appearance.

Spider veins are similar to varicose veins, but are smaller. They look like small, wispy collections or clusters of blue lines. Varicose veins are large, gnarled, and thick clusters.

Treating Varicose Veins

If you decide you want to eliminate the appearance of varicose veins, you should schedule a consultation with Dr. Bonakdar. With certain methods, varicose veins can be eliminated by making the vein break down. Because these superficial veins are not the same as the deeper veins critical to leg circulation, they can be safely eliminated without causing a problem. Blood is resultantly forced into surrounding veins.

For varicose veins, oftentimes laser and ultrasound treatments that work for spider veins are not effective. Instead, a treatment called sclerotherapy may be recommended. During sclerotherapy, a solution is injected into the varicose veins. The solution irritates the walls of the veins so that they eventually close off and hopefully disappear altogether. Multiple sclerotherapy treatments may be needed to get the desired effect.

In certain cases, only a type of surgical procedure can remove varicose veins, but Dr. Bonakdar can first determine if a non-surgical, minimally invasive treatment offered at her practice will work.
